Stuff that pisses me off

Stuff that has been pissing me off- I am glad I had the chance to see George Carlin live. It was about ten years ago, about 3 years BMS (before multiple sclerosis), and I had purchased tickets for my father and I to see him when he was through Edmonton. I have always been a huge fan- mostly due to the way he could take random human behaviors that clearly pissed him off and make them funny. It was a sad day when he passed away. Lately, there has been some things that have been pissing me off. I know I can’t do any justice to Mr. Carlin, however, here is what has been eating at me.

So if you make it smaller, it is more healthy?

Every time I have to go to the grocery store, I inevitably pass non-food items like soda and chips. While those annoy me, what really gets me angry is the new marketing being released by soft drink and beverage companies where they have created mini portions to help people be more healthy as apparently less is better because it has less calories.

What?

The logic behind this is akin to me offering you a small glass of gasoline to drink instead of a big one. Depending on how small the glass is, your body may be able to tolerate it better without actually killing you.

Do people actually drink these mini-portions and think, “yup, now I’m healthy.” If there are, these are probably the same people who think diet soda is healthy.

Poison is poison. The quantity is irrelevant. I don’t often find myself reaching for a small glass of bleach because, “a little won’t hurt me.”

Low calorie beer

Seriously?

I used to drink beer and I don’t ever remember having just one in a sitting. Can you be a beer drinker and a dieter simultaneously? Do guys go out for a beer and think, “okay now I can have the plate of wings because I had the low calorie beer?”

This is a pure example of a company inventing a product category and marketing complete nonsense. If I’m ever at a friend’s house and see low calorie beer I’m going to have an intervention right then and there.

Human Nature

With the creation of this website, I have been doing more reading and research on the human diet. I think most people accept that healthy eating is ideal, however, everyone’s definition of what constitutes a healthy diet is different. In addition, I have learned over the past several years that what we’ve been told makes up a healthy diet (some version of the food pyramid) is complete horse s&*t.

The research I have done, which you can see an overview of on the diet page, strongly suggests that we need to completely review and re-think how we feed ourselves.

What gets me pissed off is when I try to talk to my non MS suffering friends and family about diet. I get that glazed over look like, “thats nice.” Even though I try and reaffirm it is something they should look into, the years of food marketing and propaganda they’ve been exposed to is seemingly a fortress. I don’t know how you can be exposed to stories like Dr. Terry Wahls and not at least re-consider what you are consuming as food.

I know nobody likes to be wrong and no one likes to have their view of the world challenged, but is eating bread, chips, and cheese more important that your well being and vitality? I’m not just directing this to people with MS, but to everyone. Its not like non-MS’ers have magic beans in their pockets that makes food which is unhealthy for me okay for them.

Maybe it is just me.

Chatty people at the cashier

This one has absolutely nothing to do with this website.

Internally, I almost lose my mind when you are about to pay for something and you get behind one of these people:

  • the lady who has to completely unload the contents of her purse onto the counter to pay for a pack of gum. Once the transaction is finished she has an unbelievable amount of snaps , pockets and straps which need attention. If you are old enough to have a purse, you are old enough to have figured this out and be efficient by this point.
  • the guy who feels like it is his turn to be ‘on’ once he has established his claim at the counter. He feels compelled to make small talk and joke with the cashier and other people inline. I didn’t come here because I saw your name on the marquee, unless of course, your first name is ‘7’ and your last name is ’11’. I came here to buy a magazine and get on with my life; something you are currently holding up.

Until next time,

One Response to “Stuff that has been pissing me off”

  1. Hahaha, yup, so true about the diet thing. It’s frustrating to try to explain things to some people. We have been brainwashed for so long about what a “healthy diet” is. The food pyramid we were taught in school is wrong, kids. Dude, get this: we have a garden in our back yard and one of the neighbourhood kids couldn’t identify what a carrot was. Probably because it didn’t come in a box with microwave instructions.

One of my most entertaining memories of working at the horrible gas station many years ago was a regular customer who used to come in and grab a box of donuts. To quench her thirst, she would also purchase a pack of diet Coke. Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrright, because the diet pop’s chemical shit-storm is gonna keep you from going overboard after inhaling a box of donuts.
